What you need to know about Wedding Photography in Richmond and Central VA

Know the type of photographer that you want.

There are several types of wedding photographers in Richmond and central Virginia area, photojournalisitc wedding photographers, traditional wedding photraphers, full service wedding photographers, and shoot & burn wedding photographers. It is important to think of the type of style that you want in your wedding photography as well as what type of products you want from your wedding photographer (wedding albums, prints, canvas wraps, etc...).

Know the type of images that you want

Do you want a lot of wedding portraits, perhaps wedding detail shots are more you speed, and what about wedding candaids? It is important to think about these things when you look for a wedding photographer in Richmond Virginia or anywhere else, and in you initial consultations make sure to talk about it with your wedding photographer

Look at sample albums

You need to look at sample albums from a wedding photographer so you can see a wedding photographer's work from the begining of the wedding day all the way to the end. This gives you the ability to see how consistant they are through the entire wedding as well as seeing all of the images from a single wedding instead of just a bunch of images from a bunch of different weddings.

Look for consistancy in quality

The images you see should blow you away and should be impressing you with

When looking at a studio with multiple wedding photographers make sure the work you see is by the photographer you'll get

Many studios have more than one wedding photographer working for them, most with differnt levels of experience and tallent. However, this is not always talked about, so when you meet with studios don't forget to talk about this.

When Choosing a wedding photographer the most important thing to consider is do you like their style

Don't choose a wedding photographer on price alone, find a wedding photographer who's style you really love then begin to compare prices between wedding photographers who you really like

Another important poing to consider when choosing a wedding photographer is do you two click?

When you choose a photographer make sure that you choose one that you'll get along with and feel confortable with, someone who can put you at ease. Because the last thing you want is to have wedding photographs where you look akward because you felt unconfortable with the wedding photographer

Understand a photographer's packages

To effectively comparison shop you have to know what is included in a wedding photographer's packages and compare the value in each, because most wedding photographer's packages are unitique to their studio.

Destination Weddings

When choosing a photographer for a destination wedding there are a couple things that you need to consider. Do you want a wedding photographer from the location that you are going to or do you want to bring a wedding photographer from your area with you. The benefits of choosing a wedding photographer at the destination is that you won't have to pay for a travel fee. The benefits of taking a wedding photographer from your area to your destination is you will have see their work and know their quality, you will have met the wedding photographer and know their personality, and you know that you will have your wedding photography products in a timely and professional manner when you return home.

Digital Negatives included?

Another thing to consider when choosing a wedding photographer is weather or not they provide digital negaitves with their packages. All wedding studios are different when it comes to this policy, some provide none some provide low resolution and some provide full size, so make sure that you understand your wedding photographers policy on this.

Contingency Plans?

Does you photographer have contingency plans in place should his equipment fail durring the wedding? Some common solutions to this are back up equipment or having another shooter with the wedding photographer to make sure that everything is captured.

Equipment does not make someone a wedding photographer

Equipment not matter how nice doesn't make someone a great wedding photographer. At the end of the day the wedding photographer's camera is just a tool, and infact a true wedding photographer can do more with a point and click camera than most people can do with an SLR camera. That being said you definatly want to make sure that a photographer has the following equipment.
  • A SLR Camera
  • Multiple compact flash cards, or rolls of film
  • At least one flash that can be taken off of the camera
